A small training gym outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. A young man, built well, mid-20’s in a ring that is worn from the years of constant training. Dust hangs in the air as the young man works with a training dummy. One loud thump after another sounds through the empty gym. An elderly voice breaks the silence as a rotund man in a lucha libre mask bursts through a small door in the back. He waddles over to the young man obviously excited.
Man: Brock! Hijo! We did it! PWX just called, I got you a contract!
The man holds up the cell phone in his hand, proud of his accomplishment, he looks weary, he’s been on the phone for a long time. Brock Whitworth looks up from the lifeless dummy that has made a permanent imprint in the worn canvas.
Brock: That’s nice, glad to hear it.
The old man looks heartbroken, dumbfounded almost.
Man: But…hijo….but….
Brock stands up, his full 6’3” frame towering over the other man. He looks intensely at the old man, but can’t hold the straight face for long as he breaks into a smile and picks the old man up, nearly crushing him in a giant bear hug.
Brock: I’m just kidding Guapo! I’m so excited to hear that! You always manage to find the best place for me!
El Guapo: Hey, hijo, remember: Para aquellos que amo, me sacrificaré. For those I love I will sacrifice. Plus, you know that you’ve earned this. All that time put in since you came here, amigo, it’s been a labor of love and it’s paying off huh?
Brock: You’re right Guapo. This contract makes all that extra time spent in this musty old place seem totally worth it you know? I can’t wait to tell me mum and sis. They’ll be absolutely ecstatic.
The two men let the elation settle before continuing with business.
Brock: OK, not to spoil my own party here mate but, who am I facing? Adam?
El Guapo shakes his head
Guapo: Nothing of the sort hijo, you’re facing someone that’s also new, a pretty little thing named Siren. I know I normally have a game plan, but I couldn’t find anything about this woman amigo. Totally comes from out of nowhere. No twitter, never seen her in anything big, just comes waltzing in I think. Some boys I know said she started last year sometime, she’s from Crete, which I think is near Greece? I don’t know. The fact is, whether you want to face this girl or not you need to make a statement now so that you can set yourself up for that single titles run you’ve always wanted.
Brock: I know, trust me I won’t take her lightly. You know I’m always grateful for a chance to prove myself under any circumstance. I’m just worried about ring rust, you know, I haven’t competed in a few months and have barely had a live practice except for the occasional newbie. What did you show them anyway? I haven’t had a meaningful match in forever.
El Guapo’s face curls into a smile as he motions for Brock
El Guapo: Here, I’ll show you.
El Guapo leads Brock into a back room of the gym. Stacks of paper takes up most of the space, save for two chairs and a TV set up in the center. The room is even mustier than the training area and, upon entry, Brock coughs violently.
Brock: Jesus Guapo! This place looks like it hasn’t been used since 1976! What is this?
El Guapo: It’s my old game plan studio! Back in my heyday, I used to bring kids back here to watch film of their past matches and of their opponents. Now that’s it’s mostly just you and me, I hardly use it. But every now and then I splice some footage together to send to feds. As soon as you were ready I whipped something up for you and sent it out. Care to see?
Brock warily nods as El Guapo pops a VHS tape into the old machine. It lights up and, although the picture is a little fuzzy, the sound is perfectly clear. “Heroes are Remembered, Legends Live Forever” by 4 Years Strong starts to play as several clip packages of Brock in action flash across the screen. There is footage from his matches with various stars from his days in the EWC all the way to his most recent fed, Sunrise Wrestling. Brock shrugs and looks at El Guapo
Brock: OK, this is great, and thank you, seriously, but I’ve seen hundreds of these from all kinds of people. Why me Guap?
El Guapo gets the same corner grin that he had earlier and nods towards the television set. Just as Brock looks over a very generic announcers voice begins talking
Voice: Brock Whitworth, son of Greg and Hannah, was born on January 10th 1989 in Brisbane, Australia. From an early age, Brock learned that nothing good comes without blood, sweat and tears, a lesson which he utilizes in every endeavor he undertakes. A rugby star from an early age, Brock used his physically imposing 6’3” 225 pound frame to intimidate all opponents until a leg injury led to his early absence from the sport at age 17. After a few years of college and rehab, Brock became restless and moved to America with hopes of starting a powerlifting or strongman career. On a whim, Brock entered the legendary Las Vegas Wrestling Gym and never left. Brock brought his tenacity and work ethic to the realm of Sports Entertainment where he has had tremendous success in his young career, wrestling all over the world. Brock brings 110% every time he steps between those ropes, and nothing will stop his insatiable hunger for success in the squared circle. Under the watchful eye of the great luchador El Guapo, Brock has blossomed into the future of professional wrestling. When you book Brock Whitworth, you are booking a man that people want to see, and more often than not, you are booking a champion. A fierce competitor, Brock stops at nothing until his hand is raised in victory, and he will always leave the crowd wanting more. So sign the future of wrestling today, “The Pride of Brisbane”, the former EWC Tag Team Champion, former Sunrise legend, Brock Whitworth!”
The ending shot is Brock in a EWC ring, his hand raised in victory. The crowd roars as Brock points out to the audience and mouths “thank you” to the people watching. It freezes on Brock pointing at the camera as the words PRIDE OF BRISBANE appear underneath him.
After the clip fades out Brock stands there, equal parts impressed, embarrassed, and humbled.
Brock: Well, I have to hand it to you amigo, even I want to hire me now. That’s….impressive. Who did the voice over? I haven’t heard anyone like that around here…
El Guapo: Richard Dreyfus! You like it? He owed me a favor, and this was the way I got him to repay me. Pretty professional huh?
Brock looks sideways at his trainer. He wants to know the Dreyfus story, but shakes it off. He hugs El Guapo again, more tenderly this time.
Brock: I’ll never be able to repay you for everything you do for me. I’m in such debt to you and your kindness. Through everything, you’ve given me a home. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities that you’ve extended to me these past 2 years.
El Guapo is gets choked up as the two friends share a moment together.
El Guapo: You’ve put this place back on the map, given me and mi familia a source of income, and most of all made me so very proud of you, even if you are a little gringo.
Brock playfully pushes El Guapo away as Guapo chuckles
El Guapo: Seriously though hijo, you have to go in there and do your best, I trust you, and I know you will, but don’t get ahead of yourself. You’re good, damn good kid, but you’re young. One match at a time, focus on your strengths, and let’s get the W, sí?
Brock nods, looking confident, but understanding
Brock: I’ve worked hard to get where I am, no one can argue that. It’s my turn to prove to the world that I am still the future of professional wrestling, and it starts this week with Siren. It’s nothing personal, just business.
El Guapo smiles, nods, and pats Brock on the back
El Guapo: You’re a good kid hijo, you’ll go far I’m sure of it. Now let’s get back to training. Matches don’t win themselves.
Brock climbs back into the ring as El Guapo watches on. As Brock continues his workout, the old coach occasionally yells out comments as the scene fades out.
