“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”
As Nighthawk sits in his living room with a notepad and a stack of Tiami Tyler DVD’s in full preparation for his tournament match against Tiami Tyler one has to wonder how he feels about knowing that he is 1 step closer to winning the PWX World Championship for a 3rd time, but that doing so might take him farther away from his goal of being 1\2 of the World Tag Team Champions than he might want to be.
But despite the very real idea that his chances at fulfilling that dream are farther away than he would like them to be the Chicago native will never let that knowledge guide him away from the task that is in front of him, which for this week at least happens to be eliminating one member of the Establishment from having a chance at getting to the gold, while at the same time doing all that he can to remind the wrestling public at large that while some consider him to be a quote-unquote “tag team specialist”, which is not something he minds being, he can still compete at a very high level in singles competition.
But while his long-standing dispute with Noah Hanson appears to burn with no signs of stopping one would have to be a fool to think that the “Wrestling Machine”, whose entire career has been built on the bedrock of keeping his focus no matter what might be swirling around him, is going to be consumed by anger to the point that he will find himself distracted in his match this week.
But as the “Man of 1000 Holds” continues to take notes on the opponent in front of him, his Iphone 5s rings as it is his trainer and mentor Jorge Rivera on the other end of the phone. Clicking pause on the DVD’s Nighthawk answers the phone with the hint of a smile in his voice.
(Author’s Note: This conversation took place in Spanish.)
Nighthawk: “Hello, Jorge. I know that I doubled down on being Jason’s tag team partner, which is probably the absolute last thing that you wanted me to be doing. But I think I did take some of your advice. I have found the way to be both Jason Aries’s tag team partner, and my own man. Getting sneak attacked by Noah Hanson was more helpful than I thought it would be in getting it figured out. But this is important to me, teacher. I don’t know the moment when I knew that I enjoyed being a part of this, but I know I do.”
Jorge, pride evident in his voice as he talks to his smartest and most accomplished pupil: “I'm happy that you’ve found balance between your own singles career and what you’ve been doing, but I fear that you might have inadvertently missed the most important part of what I was trying to teach you. I wasn’t telling you to prize being a singles competitor over being a part of Bad Company, and if you took that from what I was telling you, I'm sorry for that. What I was trying to tell you, though, is just as important. I want you to find the man who fulfilled his father’s dream, who did what everyone else in PWX wanted to do when you took the World Heavyweight Title from Darin Zion. Whether that man can exist as part of Bad Company, or by yourself, that doesn’t matter. Finding out that he can exist, on the other hand, is important. Because if you can’t find that guy, if he doesn’t exist somewhere, all of the kind words I say to you won’t mean anything. All of the skills that you have won’t mean anything without that same relentlessness that guided you to those achievements. Take this seriously, Tristan. Your career is on the line right now, and it’s up to you to try and figure out what happens from here. Do I make myself understood?”
Nighthawk: “Yes, you do. I'll work harder on that.”
And with that, Nighthawk says goodbye to his trainer and hangs up, getting back to the work of studying his opponent.
The next morning…..
As Nighthawk puts his gear bag into his car he slowly closes his eyes, as if going over his game plan in his head. Clad in a black Island Boys t-shirt, black leather pants with orange and blue piping, and black work boots, the “Wrestling Machine” slowly opens his eyes. Nighthawk: “Since I was young enough to understand what it was that I wanted out of life, I was obsessed with wrestling. But as I got older, and I found new interests and hobbies, people began to expect that the obsession would fade, as I discovered girls, or punk rock, or video games. And yet, it never did. For all of the hours I have spent training in silence, honing skills to their peak of sharpness, I have learned many lessons, some about the best way to manipulate joints and limbs to do exactly what it is that I want them to do. But the most valuable lesson that I have learned is that there are things, and skills, that one can possess in normal life that are actually troublesome in this sport of ours. One of them, and this may be at the very top of the list depending on who it is you ask, is having a long memory. I don’t forget, at least not unless I want to, the people who do things to get on my bad side. And when I get the chance to obtain recompense for those slights, no matter how long it’s been since the slight first happened, I will get my payback for it. And that brings me seamlessly to my opponent for this week. Mrs. Tyler, I don’t forget that it was you, along with Chris Diamond and Schmied, who ran a play for your bosses to try and get myself and Jason Aries eliminated from the tag team tournament. You did that not out of vengeance towards me, which I would understand if not forgive, but rather you did it for the most shameful of reasons. You did it for MONEY, because your overlords in the Establishment wanted you to. This week, though, Mrs. Tyler, you step in the ring with me. And while everyone is thinking of me as a ‘tag team specialist’, I am still the guy who owns submission victories over the last 3 World Champions. I am still the guy who made your boss tap out in the center of the ring. This week, I remind everyone what it is that they’ve forgotten. What a machine does, Mrs. Tyler, is rather simple and straightforward. But sometimes, and especially around here, people lose the idea of what that actually is. It’s not doing something with a lack of emotion. It’s doing it with a high amount of organization. It’s being given a task, and not stopping until that job is done. This week, Mrs. Tyler, my job is beating you. My job is making sure that when the match ends I am the one with my hand raised in victory, and you are the one lying on the mat with no idea of what’s going on around you. And like every good machine ever built, from the printing press to Deep Blue, I won’t stop until my job gets done. No matter how long it takes, Mrs. Tyler, it will get done. Goodnight Mrs. Tyler. May sleep give you the courage to go on.”

What is your destiny?
In wrestling, that is a question often asked to someone aiming for any kind of a title. When you have a chance at two? The pain and anguish felt with having to give one up to go for another one is excruciating, especially if it is a world title shot.
Isn't that right Nighthawk?
You have multiple chances. Tag titles, world title. The question is, what do you want more? Do you want to know that the target on your back is one you have to face alone? That is what the world title offer possesses. Do you really need that ally however, knowing that the team you face next will be out for your blood and your life? That is what the tag title offer possesses. Either way, the options are few and the chances of survival for you are fewer. What is worth more to you?
I know what I want.
The PWX world heavyweight title. Having the one title that can basically give ownership of this company to The Establishment...that is perfect and I am the one to lead the charge and gain the gold. The Establishment will finish what the weak ones could not. We will have all of the gold, all of the power. We. Are. Unstoppable. There is not a thing anyone in PWX can do about it. Nighthawk this week will be like that pretty boy loser Timothy Hunt was last week.
A washed up ass hat trying to gain spotlight but falling to the hands of the Icy Princess.
How are those past injuries Nighthawk darling? Are you fully at a hundred percent? I have every intention of making sure you don't ever see another title reign in PWX as long as I am here. Knees, ankles, elbows, shoulders, some of the many targets that is all over your frail body. I can find a way to make you wince, scream and cry out. Beg me to stop, which I won't. Face it Nighthawk, you are practically wishing you were off doing tag team runs right now. You will not become a three time champion and you most certainly will NEVER see past this week.
My mission is clear. Get the PWX world title by ANY means necessary. That means putting you in the hospital while your friends and family come to visit you. When they ask who put you there, just whisper my name. They will know who I am, my footprint will be firmly embedded as a lasting memory for them.
See you Hawk. You won't have wings to fly.
